About the Game

Tressette is one of the great Italian card games: four players in fixed partnerships, a 40-card Italian deck and no trump suit at all. Its famous quirk is the scoring — the ace is worth a whole point while the three, two and the face cards are worth a third each, and the leftover fraction is simply thrown away at the end of every deal.

Basic Rules

1. 1Four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other.
2. 2Ten cards each, dealt five at a time, anticlockwise; the player to the dealer’s right leads the first trick.
3. 3There is NO trump suit. Follow the suit led if you can; if you cannot, you may play anything, and the highest card of the suit led always wins.
4. 4The card ranking is unique: 3 beats 2, which beats the ace, then king, knight, jack, 7, 6, 5, 4.
5. 5The ace is worth 1 point; the 3, 2, king, knight and jack are worth a third each; 4 to 7 are worth nothing. The last trick is worth 1 point.
6. 6Each side totals its thirds for the whole deal and then discards the fraction, so a deal is always worth exactly 11 points.
7. 7Accusi are declared at the end of the first trick: three or four of a kind of aces, twos or threes, or an ace-two-three of the same suit, for 3 or 4 extra points.
8. 8The first partnership to reach 21 points wins the match.
