About the Game

Jass is the national card game of Switzerland, and its Schieber form pits two partnerships against each other with a 36-card deck. The team that names trump — or pushes the choice across to a partner — hunts for the Bauer and the Nell, the jack and nine that rule the trump suit. Declared Weis combinations, the trump king-and-queen Stöck, and careful trumping carry each side through a long game to 1000 points.

Basic Rules

1. 1Four players form two fixed partnerships, with partners seated across from each other.
2. 2Played with a 36-card Swiss deck, from six up to ace in each of the four suits.
3. 3The forehand names trump or pushes (schiebt) the choice across to the partner.
4. 4In the trump suit the jack (Bauer) is highest at 20 points and the nine (Nell) next at 14.
5. 5Outside trump the ace is worth 11, the ten 10, the king 4 and the queen 3; the rest count nothing.
6. 6Weis — runs and four of a kind held in hand — are declared for extra points before the second trick.
7. 7The trump king and queen together, the Stöck, are worth 20 points when they are played.
8. 8The team winning the last trick adds 5 points, and the first side to reach 1000 wins.
